Llama Fiber is lightweight, extremely warm, very versatile and has been used by South Americans for thousands of years. Llamas express different types of fiber. Some llamas have short coarse wool with obvious double coats consisting of soft down and thick guard hair. While other llamas have long silky coats which tend to be very fine with little or no difference between the down and guard hair (single-coats). Most llamas fall somewhere in between since llamas do not necessarily breed true to type.

However, due to the growth of llama ownership for specific purposes, the different types may become more distinct and perhaps in the future even may be defined as "breeds". Breeders of pack llamas tend to prefer the short-woolled type because the fiber does not interfere with the pack equipment nor the llama's body temperature. While the growing pool of fiber enthusiasts tend to prefer the heavy-woolled llama for the high volume and fineness of the hair.

All llamas grow usable fiber. Due to the vast range in quality, their fiber can be used to make a wide range of products - from durable goods such as rugs, to the softest and finest of wearables. The highest quality of llama fiber is often compared to cashmere. Some of the uses include:

  • fine spun yarns
  • woven tapestries
  • felt
  • textile arts
  • rugs
  • rope
  • stuffing/filler
  • mulching
